It’s not a lack of empathy, I understand how they feel. But I also think they’ve got a bad attitude and they need an adjustment. They are a sovereign nation, so it would not be right to use actual force to try to impel that adjustment, but there is nothing illegal about requiring that a genuine change be made before they are given any more money. It can be demanded in a non-hostile fashion, but it should be demanded, IMO. Instead of a ultimatum, it should given something like “If we are to keep funding you, we need a sign that you are serious about reform.” The ‘we’ in this case being the rest of the EU, and they can feel free to do something else if they like. This is just one man’s opinion.

You need to be clearer in your writing then, because the original comment said nothing of the above.

The idea they need an attitude adjustment is still you placing yourself morally above them but I’ll assume you’re having trouble expressing your best ideas.
