I’m not sure I agree with this particular argument. How do you know he didn’t know who the member was? He didn’t publish his name, but the name would be out of place in the context - it’s not a news item, it’s an essay.

Sure, this could have been written, but the reader doesn’t care about names of some random guys in Icke’s circle, so this kind of breaks the narrative flow. Yeah, I get your point about skepticism. But there’s nothing extraordinary in what has been reported here.
