My sister had a bout with cancer, her husband had a nasty car accident and they had to declare bankruptcy over their medical bills. This sort of thing should not happen in any civilized society.

There is a woman on our village library board who’s husband died two years ago.

They used to own a huge ranch in the north of the county. Cancer treatments were so expensive that not only did they have to sell their ranch and cattle for payments, but the county also held a fundraiser and businesses in the area donated things for an auction to raise further money.

She now lives in a tinier house than I do here in the village - savings and retirement completely wiped out.
