Hang on, is this person saying the people “wore masks, distanced, and followed all subsequent protocols” after they “gotten the virus”? They would probably explain why they “still gotten sick”.

fwiw, i think it’s just imprecise / bad writing
they got sick in spite of ‘doing all the right things’
as if a mask is some kind of guarantee

and wait till someone gets the vaccine and then gets the virus after. hoo boy
