re: #253 Kid A

Sorry, I wasn’t blaming the Times, I was pointing something out from a tweet-war I was having with someone that says in the article I posted that the ACA was blamed for the physicians’ request that pelvic exams be eliminated. The Times’ article does not mention the ACA anywhere in the article. Not once.

But it seems to be discouraging the practice of a yrly exam by stating,

“Out of a mixture of “fear and embarrassment,” many women won’t volunteer to their internist their struggles with pain during sex, incontinence, abdominal bloating or spotting, said Rabin, head of urogynecology at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, N.Y. The pelvic exam can detect some of those, and “the trust we build with patients” encourages women to report them as well, she added.”

Maybe not to a urologist, but to her gyn? Absolutely, and Rabin is correct. The days when women were embarrassed by having a pelvic back in the earlier part of the last century are long gone. In fact, many women like myself saw our ob-gyn as our primary physician, although now, since I’m on Medicare, that no longer happens. A gyn is seen as a “specialist”, just as a cardiologist or urologist would be, and one must start from a family practice physician, an internist, or a general practitioner, and the latter are becoming increasingly rare.
