Obdicut and I had some long debates about the GMD, which had a good test yesterday. I’m hopeful it will work really reliably one day soon. Might be a boondoggle, but that has been said of so many expensive systems over the years.

It absolutely is a boondoggle. We’ve never even tried to simulate real world conditions, things any determined adversary would do like deploy chaff or decoy warheads, tumbling unstable warheads, inbound phase maneuverability. All we ever do is strap on a transponder to the thing, launch it, feed the launch telemetry directly to the targeting system and intercept under the most controlled, gamed out conditions imaginable.
