To be fair, no matter how much King hated it in the end, the Kubrick version will always be the one people remember.

It felt to me like King wasn’t understanding that a film is a separate, free-standing work of art, no matter what it is based on. I can kind of understand that, since it was his book, but Kubrick created a masterpiece. If I recall correctly, the film adaptations of his books that he did have a big hand in were not quite as master-piece-y. Not really his oeuvre.
