The people who nurtured the Tea Party thought that they could control it the same way they’ve controlled the fundies for years. They underestimated the amount of mistrust they’ve ginned up and now they’re paying the price. Trump is getting a lock on that 27% of the population that the GOP has so carefully kept at a boil for the past couple of decades. Here’s hoping that the GOP is finally hoist on its own petard.

Higgs, I got a feeling that we’re going to see a full blown 1912 type split in the GOP. Perot almost pulled that off in 1992, but Trump is going to break the GOP in two. I see Trump purging the establishment out of the GOP and they will cast their lot with the Libertarians. Trump will keep the teabaggers, gun nuts and Jesusbots in the GOP. You’ll see the GOP and Libertarians tear into each other. This time the split will be permanent. I would not be surprised to see the Libertarians replace the GOP as a major party and what’s left of the GOP will go the way of the British Liberal Party after 1924—they’ll just be a regional rump party with a scattering of seats in the South and Rocky Mountain states.
