Wingnuts use the Kessler quote to “prove” that LBJ “tricked” Blacks into voting Democrat with welfare and food stamps. The idea that Blacks will vote for whoever gives them “free stuff” is just completely racist as fuck.

It really is. The fact of the matter is African Americans were flocking to the Democratic Party in the age of FDR and hell some would argue that Hoover’s response to the Great Flood of 1928 started that even more. When it comes down to it, the Republican party and conservatives did everything possible to alienate the African-American community.
