When you think about it, ST was quite revolutionary for its time. Two Jewish actors, a couple white Christians, an African American woman, and a Japanese-American man. Star Trek was never really my thing but I appreciate that Roddenebrry created a world where people of many backgrounds work together to solve problems. I work in a diverse law firm. My boss is Iranian-American. The other clerks I’ve worked with have come from unique backgrounds as well and many of our clientale does too and then my personal life where I have a Peruvian-American SiL and my SiL’s sister is married to a trilingual El Salvadorian American who is such a terrific uncle to my niece and a great guy in general.

Well, think about it this way: one of the characters was obviously Japanese, and we’d only finished up a war with Japan in 1945. Another character was obviously Russian, and we had the Cold War going on. Lt. Uhura was African-American and a woman! Yeah, of course the captain was supposed to be a white male, but Roddenberry knew what he was doing. And as a kid watching ST:TOS, I couldn’t help but absorb that the future world could be a better place. We’re still trying to get there.
