The mess that led to DADT was started by Clinton (unwisely) saying something sensible about gays in the military after he was elected and before he was in office. Some senior Congressional Democrats (led by Sam Nunn as I recall), pounced on this opportunity to shore up their social conservative bona fides (i.e., bigotry).

Seeing Nunn and company get the boot as the civil rights realignment became complete was deeply satisfying.
