It wasn’t a strong, single nation. It was a nation with a high manufacturing base. Jim Crow, reservations, and internment camps should have disabused you of that idea.

No, I’m looking at the majority of white Southerners after the Civil War as morally children, whose primary motivation is fear of punishment. If it took a thousand years for them to get to an actual sense of ethics, oh well.
