Also, as a millennial (but an old millennial) I will be fabulously surprised and pleased when there are Social Security benefits for me to claim when the time comes and it will be welcome to help supplement my retirement savings but like a rational person I am planning for a worst-case no benefits scenario because I’d rather be prepared.

It’s not all rationality, there’s a fair amount of luck and/or privilege involved in simply being able to plan for that. A lot of people who live paycheck to paycheck simply don’t have the option.
