What I’ve never understood about any of this, is that Republicans really have no reason to be loyal to Trump. The vast majority of the Trump base would end up voting for whoever the GOP nominee was. Trump’s not a life long Republican, he wasn’t a big donor, and he’s not done anything to help any Republican get elected (other than himself).

So why the fuck do they remain loyal to him?

Because that’s an assumption they really don’t want to test and the vast majority of Trump’s base probably isn’t enough to prevent an absolute wipeout in 2020. Mostly they’re loyal to him out of inertia, they’re on a bender and making bad decisions is what you do when you’re on a bender. But they’re also acutely aware that an unknown but solid percent of the Trump base is a fanatical cult, and GOP officeholders are afraid that betraying the cult leader would end in blood.
