That’s the thing. They like to present that argument in a way that X person was a Republican and that means they would have agreed with the GOP platform of 2016. MLK who counted Bayard Rustin as a close friend wasn’t going to be fond of today’s GOP.. Just as George Wallace circa 1962 wouldn’t be fond of the Democrats of today. MLK was criticizing the Republicans for nominating Goldwater. The Republicans who supported Civil Rights deserve our thanks and respect but the RNC did not take the issue seriously. If they did, they wouldn’t have nominated Goldwater and Miller, both who opposed the CRA 1964 which MLK of course supported.

There’s a famous quote from MLK about the 1964 Republican Convention:

“The Republican Party geared its appeal and program to racism, reaction, and extremism. All people of goodwill viewed with alarm and concern the frenzied wedding at the Cow Palace of the KKK with the radical right.”

In the unlikely even that he’d been a Republican before that, he surely was not afterwards.
