For what it’s worth, the Times has denied that they obtained it illegally. This could be a whistleblower situation.

It’s a ‘known fact’ in right wing circles that the FBI leaked the info to NYT. Of course there’s no evidence of it, and even if that were the case, NYT could still publish it.
