To create a Navy larger than any since WWII, Trump would basically have to plow the entire federal budget into shipbuilding and then some. The only way that St. Ron of the Limitless Spending Spree managed to get close to his promised 600 ship navy was to not only drag ships out of mothballs, but to delay retirement of ships that had been in service since Korea AND go on an outrageously expensive program of shipbuilding and modernization.

What happened almost as soon as he left office and the Cold War ended? The bulk of those ships that had seen tens of billions spent on bringing them up to something resembling modernity were retired and sold off or melted into razor blades. And since we don’t have a huge fleet of post-WWII tin cans to rehabilitate, the only option is to basically build ships at a breakneck pace. And that’s not cheap by any sense of the imagination.
