re: #245 Hecuba’s daughter
Too much time lurking in the RW bubble can suck anyone in. There is the real world and then there is alternative reality— and this alternative reality blinds you to the truth and makes you more susceptible to accepting statements that are outright lies.
It’s actually far worse than that - we know that tens of millions of Americans are ridiculously susceptible to brainwashing and mass delusion…but if it’s so easy to fool people into believing bad, dangerous things, why isn’t equally easy to get them to believe or accept good things? The answer is in this thread by award-winning sci-fi author N.K. Jemisin (and one really needs to read the whole thing):
It’s not that the right is better at storytelling. It’s that their stories are simpler, more viscerally satisfying. “A Black woman stole your job!” “They want your guns!” Easy, reductive us vs them, you in danger girl level stuff. Even when it’s not true, it provokes a reaction.

But “eat your veggies” is always going to be a harder sell than “have another snack.” (Vegetarians sit down, I’m making a point. :P) So the problem isn’t that the left doesn’t understand the right. It’s that we learned to like (or at least eat) veggies too, and they… didn’t.
