Indeed, I’m now thinking this whole war-game venture is a public signal to Xi and his underlings. Namely, that the US can plan for war against the PRC and will prepare to execute it.

China has a surplus of some 17 million males in its population. Even assuming not all of them are military age, they could still easily lose 6 or 7 million soldiers in a war and even if they only make limited territorial or strategic gains, it would ease their demographics…

Their chief concern would be whether the economic and political fallout would be more detrimental to the West than to themselves.
