Personally, I refuse to use those lanes. They effectively eliminate three out of four cashier’s jobs. And I don’t even get a discount for doing what a store employee used to do for me. Bad all around.

At the local Home Depot, self-checkout is the only lane open on Sunday mornings until about 10:00. I’ve left and gone to Lowes more than once as a result. Lowes, thankfully, has not yet succumbed to their installation.

In the case of the Kroger Store where I work (King Soopers), we have six robots, so that’s one attendant for 6 stations. The King Soopers I used to live next to in Golden Colorado had 12 stations… 6 “15 items or less” and 6 newer stations that are bigger and designed to accommodate a full basket of groceries.
