I remember one of my fave history professors quoting that way, way back when Reagan was still in his 1st term. Never quite figured out what a “continental liar” was … any hints? Was “continental” something of an adjective meaning “really superior”? Is that why there are “Lincoln Continentals”? Am I answering my own question? Is it time to get back to work?

In some contexts, “continental” means European but not British. For fashion, food, art and sex, this was often (depending on the particular time frame) a very good thing.
