Plaid cloth is not new, since it was associated with Celts dating before Roman times. Actual official tartan patterns? Never existed before the two brothers made them up.

I remember seeing a documentary wherein mummified bodies in northwestern China (along the silk roads) had reddish hair and wore plaids (probably from around the latter Han dynasty, or roughly the mid-late Roman empire era).
