No Republican is going to vote against Kavanaugh because even if they lose in three months, their party is set for the next 1-2 generations minimum. Every law and precedent they hate with every fiber of their being will be on the table for “revision” or “overturning.” The door will be closed on efforts to reverse gerrymandering, while doors to nuking RvW and the ACA will fly open. They will no longer have to worry that Roberts might get cold feet, they’ll have a guaranteed 5-4 majority ruling for years to come.

Not including the Kavanaugh pick, the next president (or more accurately, whoever wins the 2020 election) will likely have 2-3 picks. Ginsburg is 85, Breyer is 80, Thomas is 70. Roberts is 63, but has a history with seizures. If/when Ginsburg, Breyer, and Thomas step away, that’s when you can start talking about the balance of the Court being defined for a generation.
