Short of Heller being overturned in the near future, there will be no total ban on guns. Even in a scenario where Democrats dominated the Congress long enough to pass such a total ban, and they had an “anti-gun” president to sign the bill, the Supreme Court would be quick to put an injunction on the law until such time as it could rule it unconstitutional.

If this country ever got that point, then an armed populace would not be any sort of check on government overreach.

Realistically, look for a return to the AWB, perhaps with the gun-show loophole closed and ‘bullet button’ provisions. Anything else will run into the Supreme Court. To do anything else means Senate confirmation of 2-3 liberal justices or multi-generational change to the 2A. I don’t want to see the President blow his 2nd term tilting at this windmill. There are a lot of doable things that need to be done.
