Right, we told ourselves that the GOP would take decades to recover after Dubya’s presidency.

2 years later, they came back in a “wave election” by screaming at folks that the ACA was gonna kill grandma, rape their cat, and pour sugar in their gas tanks. In retrospect, it seems the only reason that McCain and Romney lost is because they actually avoided the air raid siren. The ranks of wingnuts simply did not like a candidate that avoided wearing the white robes.

I disagree. I think it took a while for the whole racist pot to come to full boil.

My wingnut cousin said that even though he was against Obama and really didn’t want him elected, that “at least it would take race off the table”. By this he meant basically that now blacks had been allowed to elect one of their own as President, they’d have to shut up about racial injustice.

But they didn’t. In fact, they started complaining about cops shooting them! And they said our society is racist!

Basically, black people being unwilling to sit down, shut up, and accept what white America gave them was what brought a certain kind of white people’s racism to a full, rolling boil, and Trump was totally willing to Go There, like nobody else would.

I don’t think Trump’s approach would have worked in either 2008 or 2012. It took 8 years of the GOP promising to make the Black Guy In The White House go away, to make him suffer, to make all his accomplishments vanish to get those white people THAT MAD.
