I always preferred a bridle with loop reins, over long reins.

The only advantage I know of with long reins is that if you need to get off your horse while out in the pasture, to fix the fence, open and close a gate, take a leak, etc; is that cow horses are trained to stay put if you drop the long reins on the ground below their head.

They may nibble some grass, but will stand there and not wander off until you take the reins in your hand.

or… if you want to tie them to the hitching post.
