well, it’s a start, but i still don’t really understand the election results

It’s just a balance of power thing. Voters like to have different parties in the White House and Congress. Bush had a Republican Congress briefly. It’s a following indicator. Obama is likely to be a two term president so they’ll probably lose the Senate at some point too. When the next Republican president gets elected (that could be a while) everything will flip.
