The price of slaves increased steadily from 1802 to 1860. In 1810, the price of a “prime field hand” was $900; by 1860, that price had doubled to $1,800.
So if the Union bought all of the slaves it would have cost $7,110,950,400. Where does Ron Paul think the government would have been able to come up with that amount of cash?
Not all the slaves were prime field hands. Still, it’s a lot of money.
