When Andrew Carnegie proposed and lobbied for the estate tax, it was never his intent that the government should get *any* of that money. He wanted people who’d amassed great fortunes to give it all away before they died, because they’d presumably have good ideas about how such funds should be put back into circulation to benefit the general public and build a better future for us all.

We USED TO deplore the idea of a moneyed aristocracy. Look at movies from before 1980 - the children of the rich were generally seen as vapid and silly.
