re: #216 Old Liberal

I do not hate them. I simply will not ignore their racism and white supremacy. If I were a baker, I would even make their cake for them. I simply will not socialize with people who are not nice people, who are racist and support traitors. If that is hate, well, call me a hater. I shun.

We all have, or had, racist thoughts and attitudes if we were raised in this country (or probably any country, but I can’t speak to that). It’s an ugly and very real part of our heritage. None us us are so pure. The difference between us is that the more liberal among us recognize that and our privilege. When those ingrained racist thoughts emerge, we are able to see them for what they are or when they are pointed out to us, we can change them.

I’ll go back to this conservative friend. She is a woman of some wealth that she has earned from hard work throughout her life and she has overcome many tremendous obstacles. She honestly can’t see that everyone else can’t do the same thing if they would just apply themselves. She does not recognize the privilege of white skin and Mensa-level IQ that made much of her success possible, though I think our talks are making some headway there. I would call her an economic GOPer who unfortunately continues to blind herself to the racism in the party. The dogwhistles, even sirens, just zoom right past her.

I have never heard a racist word from her or seen her treat any others with anything but respect. She is a lovely, generous woman. Does her refusal or perhaps inability at this point to acknowledge what her GOP has become make her evil?
