What kind of message does it send that Israel has disengaged from the more violent of the two Palestinian “states”? It’s like everything in this conflict is designed to undercut moderates wherever they might be.

It was based on point that while Israel thinks it might be able to reach a deal someday to keep some parts of the West Bank in land swaps, Sharon knew that ultimately the Gaza settlements would have to go. There was no scenario where a peace treaty would let Israel keep them there. Also, don’t forget that the Gaza pullout happened before Hamas took over Gaza.
