re: #263 Anymouse

I just got off the phone with my sister in California. She and her wife want to move out of their tiny Berkeley apartment and buy a two-bedroom house.

After much looking, she noted the cheapest one available was $800,000, an amount they will likely never have.

I pointed out they could move here, where you can get the same sort of house (plus a much larger yard) for less than $20,000 - no dice, doesn’t want to live in conservative Nebraska. I guess she is going to be staying in her apartment.

I had a friend a couple years ago working as a Web designer in Kalispell, Montana. He was offered a job with Cabela’s in Sidney, and turned it down because he thought the pay was too low. (It was about $80,000 a year.) He said he couldn’t afford to buy a house or live on $80,000.

I pointed out my house cost less than a quarter of that. He is still stuck in his apartment too… .

Well people want to live in different places. Your sister might feel more comfortable in Berkeley than Nebraska for her own reasons. It is unfortunate that nice places to live are more pricey.
