Maryland had a similar revolt some years later, in which a disaffected Anglican priest became a Puritan. He saw Maryland’s majority-Catholic government as an offence to his religious sensibilities (and he also couldn’t get patronage from the government), so he raised an army of Protestant citizens in Maryland. They successfully overthrew the colonial government.

He later participated in two more rebellions, both of which failed. He was then charged by the Puritan government of Maryland with “blasphemy against the Christian faith,” for which he was sentenced to a fine of £20 and to be bored through the tongue with a red-hot iron (he was pardoned by the new governor for his past service in the Protestant rebellion in the colony).

After that, he tried to get reëected to the Maryland Assembly, but the majority Puritan government kept him out due to his past as an Anglican priest.
