If they had not backed out of the Lifehouse project (much of which landed on Who’s Next), it could have been the most monumental and prophetically prescient rock album of all time. Alas, it was just too damn far ahead of its time.

I kind of look at Lifehouse as Townsend’s Pet Sounds: So hard to translate from his own head to other people that he drove himself nuts. Who’s Next was what happened when Townsend had to rejoin the real world, including his own band. It’s an album full of great Who songs.

My sentimental favorite Who album was their 60’s pop statement, Sell Out. It’s also got “I Can See For Miles” which is as definitive a Who single as they made.
