I agree its too late now, though I read one Utah legislator filed a bill to name same-sex marriages “pairages.” If they were going to constitutionally created civil unions, they would need a definitions statute specifying that a “civil union” is a “marriage” so that people entering into civil unions would get all of the benefits of marriage.

So either a lot of additional legal work to clean up the language, or an attempt to make a distinction without a legal difference.
