Related story but a positive one. But when my Dad’s cousin got married. His grandmother asked her son’s brother in law, my Uncle the RCC priest if it was okay if she went to the ceremony since it was held in an Episcopal church, he gave her his blessing. I know that’s not a big deal to us now but this was in the early 50’s when there was still some friction between Catholics and Protestants on that sort of thing. Same Uncle also was the priest of a poor black congregation in Louisiana. I never knew the man but his life and actions in it are part of why I dislike the Religious Right. Uncle Bill was open minded to people of all backgrounds. He also served honorably in WWII as a chaplain and bravely confronted his alcoholism. We’re not sure if he struggled with alcohol before the war or the war was the catalyst.

The first clue I had that all this shit was too weird for me (way before I was an atheist) was when my mom’s older brother’s family (which was well on its way to 10 kids) specified on their Christmas card that they were ROMAN Catholic.
