I agree with your premise. I think marketing has driven the culture for centuries. Just when you think they can’t go any lower, they keep digging! Except that they were saying the same thing about opera back in the 19th Century!

My point: this has been going on for centuries. It has yet to play itself out in the new media.

Well, back in the 19th century, they couldn’t have foreseen the wonderful things that would happen to opera, in “What’s Opera, Doc?” and “The Rabbit of Seville”.
