I’ve got a copy of that too. It’s on my reading list (if I can ever find the time). I finally decided that I’d check the syllabi from various universities that offer polysci programs and pick the most common ones to try to get at least somewhat objective material. The thing is, it seems history is always being revised—I don’t mean like in the flat out lying wingnut manner, but rather in light of new knowledge. It’s aggravating.

That book is a pretty good one, although it’s specifically about the Ottoman front- you won’t find out much about the Germans except in their dealings with the Turks and Russians.

The Western front gets a lot of the coverage even now, but the crux of the war lay in the East. The war started out of (Bismarck’s quote) “a damn fool thing” in the Balkans, and the Ottomans turned to to be far more tenacious than the Allies expected. If not for Gallipoli, the Russians would have had a friendly warm water port and the world would have been spared Britain’s Machiavellian peace.
