Could also be that these people are fairly clueless as to the symbolism, aware at best that it is something “American”, or a factory reject purchased for a few rupees at a bazaar.
That’s probably the most likely explanation. One of my students saw an image of the old Stars and Bars and she remarked, “I’ve seen that before, but now I don’t remember where I saw it or what country it belongs to.”
And Czechs do learn about the American Civil War in their world history classes.
