I remember better times when the white working class was thriving with well paid unionized factory jobs.

They were already racist assholes.

The economic decline just made it a lot more blatant.

My personal opinion is that their racism was what allowed the rich to rig the economy against them. When you say “blacks shouldn’t have access to higher education” or “blacks shouldn’t be in my union” you allow those higher up to make it harder on you as well.
