You raise an interesting question. One that I honestly do not know enough to fully answer (to me).

In terms of current meaning, where “well-regulated” means under state/government organization and discipline. I fully agree with you.

The best thing I have found to understand the founders intent are the first to Militia Acts of 1792.

Reading that text is tedious but rewarding. It specifies exactly what was expected - and frankly the requirement that all members of the militia buy a military caliber musket and maintain it when it was not an especially good hunting arm tells me that they probably would have required ownership of an AR had they existed then.
