Not only could he have then taken credit for the inevitable rise in her poll numbers, he would have marginalized the dead enders early instead of continuing to legitimize their delusional hatred. Now his reasonable followers have already moved on, he has no bargaining chips left and he’s only endorsing after being made to look like an ineffective and ungracious asshole.
