There is a lot of talk about “the dignity of labor” and the social value it provides, remember Ronnie Reagan’s “The best social program you can offer someone is a job”?

American culture is still imbued (whether correctly or through some other machination) with the Protestant work-ethic. A day in the field makes you a better person with gawd. The Protestant morality ethic, hence the US’s backwards views on sexuality and many other aspects of religious culture that were brought over by the early settlers. And, more specifically, the controlling aspects of life that the leaders of those settlers imbued in their communities.
