No one would have cared. Vietnam was a deeply unpopular war that ended over 40 years ago. The fact that someone lied to escape serving would not be shocking and would never have affected the 2016 results, especially given that Trump was a Republican. Trump’s disparaged McCain during the campaign and that didn’t harm him; why would his evading the draft 50 years ago make any difference?

We’ve been seeing a series of stories about Trump actions before the election, some of them going back decades, all pointing to shady dealings, corruption, and criminality, and yet the Times didn’t feel the need to investigate them until now.

That’s a big part of the problem. They prioritized the bulkshit email nonsense over the wide ranging Trump corruption - even on the Trump foundation being nothing more than a money laundering option for Trump to profit from other people’s donations. They amplified Trump’s claims that Clinton Fdn was corrupt, when it actually was Trump doing the crimes (projecting like Imax).

The attempt to catch up now shows how badly they fell for Trump’s spin (and still are - because they’re playing never ending game of catch-up while Trump spews on to the next outrageous set of lies).
