The Doctor did treat her differently. He met her through bizarre circumstances, namely her deaths. To him, she might have been a ghost who would disappear in an instead.

Well it’s true, perhaps I’m getting too much of the “damsel in distress” vibe from having rewatched “The Crimson Horror.” She is a strong character and certainly in keeping with the idea that the best counterpart to the current Doctor is a strong woman willing to smack some sense into him.
