Reynolds undoubtedly lives in a hermetically sealed bubble of white-ness, with perhaps a few middle class AA people on the periphery. Consciously or not, he’s walled himself off from the reality of the less fortunate economically and educationally, especially from the reality of living as a POC in mostly white America. Like a lot of other Republicans, he figures since his life is pretty good, everybody’s life is pretty good, and if it isn’t, it’s their fault, as sinners or failures or deadbeats — whatever.

I’m a white-haired white man. I don’t need to worry about being shot by a police officer for a routine traffic stop, or being denied something because of my skin color. But I acutely understand how tough it would be if I had been born with a different skin tone.
