Did his people really miss this ruling against Bill Clinton?

Unfortunately the Clinton ruling isn’t exactly as on point as people think, because Clinton was sued in Federal Court and the current action against Trump was filed in NY State Court. That might not seem like a big difference but the 1996 SCOTUS ruling specifically left open this question. Imani Gandi & Jessica Mason covered this awhile ago over at Rewire.
