The media were caught violating the prime rule of journalism: assume nothing. Reporters are supposed to question *everything* doublecheck *everything*. Ditto their editors.

I fear that you are living in a dream of “All the President’s Men.” Broadcast journalism hasn’t been like that since, roughly, CBS moved its news broadcasts into its entertainment division, and certainly since cable swept in, not even to mention the Internet. Even print news, on the few serious papers that survive, is a poor imitation of what it once was, largely because it has been taken over by giant corporations that care no more about good journalism than CBS did when it stabbed its newspeople in the back.
