As I said the other day, Herring hasn’t exactly covered himself in glory through this by joining the chorus of voices saying that Northam needed to go the moment the photo became public, but then backtracking days later when Fairfax become a political liability himself and thus made the AG next in line. The best choice at this point would be for Fairfax to resign, Northam to name a new LG, and then he and Herring both resign so that the new LG can take the top seat and appoint their replacements.

I certainly think Herring’s original sin was less than Northam’s—but if Fairfax winds up leaving office while Northam and Herring stay, the AA population of Virginia are going to be justifiably enraged….
