It was always about performance not substance. He really screwed up though with this most recent stunt. Not only is it backfiring in Florida, which has a large and growing Venezuelan community, it’s also not playing well in Miami with the Cubano community either. That doesn’t even begin to get into his legal exposure for kidnapping and human smuggling. He might avoid a direct charge, but he’s still going to be investigated for conspiracy to commit and there’s no meaningful difference between conspiracy and actual kidnapping at the federal level.
